Bronchodilator

Bronchodilators are medications that help relax and widen the air passages in the lungs, making it easier to breathe. They are primarily used to treat conditions that cause airway constriction, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchitis.

The mechanism of action of bronchodilators varies depending on the class of drug. Beta-agonists, such as albuterol, stimulate beta-2 receptors in the smooth muscles of the airway, causing relaxation and dilation of the bronchi. Anticholinergics, like ipratropium, block the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes airway constriction. Methylxanthines, including theophylline, work by inhibiting phosphodiesterase, leading to increased cyclic AMP levels, which helps in bronchodilation.

Common drugs in the bronchodilator class include short-acting beta-agonists (SABAs) like albuterol, long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs) like salmeterol, anticholinergics like ipratropium, and methylxanthines such as theophylline.

The main uses of bronchodilators are to relieve acute bronchospasm and manage chronic respiratory conditions. It improves airflow and reduce symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. They can be used both for short-term relief and long-term management of chronic lung diseases.
